Adapted Excerpts from Exemplars of Assessment: Thoughts on Volume II and an Excerpt from Howard University
Jane Marie Souza; Tara A. Rose; Glenn Allen Phillips
Assessment Update, v36 n1 p8-9, 14 2024
This article is excerpted from the book "Exemplars of Assessment in Higher Education, Volume Two" (Souza and Rose) and includes an excerpt from Howard University (Phillips). There is a complex relationship between institutional (formerly regional) accrediting bodies and institutions of higher education. Though we believe that accreditors are partners in the pursuit of quality in education, the nature of this partnership and the high stakes involved create a great deal of apprehension. Perhaps nowhere is the tension between the two entities more apparent than in the area of assessment. This second volume includes the work of 17 institutions suggested by 11 accrediting bodies. In Volume II, institutions once again demonstrated creativity in addressing assessment challenges. Enacting new assessment traditions based on story, storying, and storytelling can position a college or university to tell a mission-aligned and data-driven story of growth, challenging traditional "ways of doing."
