Enhancing Multiplication Fact Strategies with "Quick Looks"

The learning of multiplication facts has long been an important focus of the primary grades, but lasting mastery of facts requires a meaningful approach that develops all four components of mathematical proficiency (understanding, fluency, problem-solving, and reasoning). This article shares how visual imagery in the form of Quick Looks with dot patterns can be used to encourage the development of key multiplication fact strategies. The Quick Look activities and classroom discussion described in the article led to greater gains in overall multiplication fact fluency and deeper understanding of strategy application for the participating Year 3 students.
