Therapeutic Aspects in the Autobiographical/Autoethnographic Performance of Three Women Addressing Their Experience of Communal Sleeping as Children in the Kibbutz
Meira Medina-Junge; Susana Pendzik
Research in Drama Education, v29 n1 p148-168 2024
Autobiographical theatre usually brings to the forefront personal experiences that have been hidden or silenced, while the autoethnographic approach emphasises their social dimensions. This article looks at "Night Watchers" (an autobiographical/autoethnographic piece) featuring three artists who, using acting, painting, and poetry, tell the story of their communal sleeping as children in the kibbutz, revealing its emotional sequels until today. Children's communal sleeping was customary in the kibbutz in Israel, from their establishment until the 1980s. The article takes this piece as a case-study to explore the potential of autobiographical/autoethnographic performance to achieve therapeutic transformation while also contemplating the social context.
