Catalyst for Community Change: The Story of Career and Technical Education at Turtle Mountain Community College
Chelsey Luger
Tribal College Journal of American Indian Higher Education, v35 n2 2023
The Turtle Mountains are an abundant, forested enclave, standing out from the miles and miles of flat surrounding farmland. At Turtle Mountain, an Anhishinaabe nation in north-central North Dakota near the Canadian border, paved roads run along rolling hills, and the ground brims with multicolored wildflowers and tall, swaying grasses. The woods are bursting with life, the lakes are sparkling, and the people are active, whether boating and fishing with their families, golfing on the course, or staying busy with work at Turtle Mountain Community College (TMCC). TMCC is a gem of a tribal college, currently celebrating its 50th anniversary. Within TMCC is the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Department--an anchor of the community that has created countless jobs and changed lives for the thousands of students who have completed their programs over the years. This article presents the story of CTE at Turtle Mountain Community College.
