In a small rural school district in the southeast, two high schools have both seen a decline in their enrollment, so the two high schools are merging into one facility until a new school is built. Naturally students have concerns about the proposed organization, with students at one school already having concerns about the current lunch schedule, parking, and the time between classes. With the influx of students in the building, these questions were the inspiration for this task, as they warrant further investigation. The authors wanted to design a mathematical modeling task for an Algebra II class that would allow them to explore and investigate questions they have about the future of their school. After discussing with the class, they identified a question to explore. With only four minutes between classes currently, staff and students had previously attempted to increase this time for students, but the administration decided not to make a change. However, now a more populated school could create difficulties for students to get to class on time. Specifically, the prompt asked the students to determine how much time should be allowed between classes once the high schools combine. The authors implemented this task in a 10-student Algebra II class spanning two 50-min class periods.
