Dana Curton; Laura Hess
Learning Professional, v44 n5 p38-41 2023
In response to the growing demand for special education teachers, St. Vrain Valley Schools district established the Special Education Alternative Licensure Cohort in 2019. This article discusses this induction and mentorship program, tailored specifically to support new alternative and temporary license special education teachers. The program has helped alternatively certified teachers to thrive in their schools. For the past two years, the retention rate for cohort teachers has been 85%, which is notable since research shows that alternatively certified teachers tend to have double the attrition rates after their first year than traditionally certified teachers.
