Steps to Equity for Students with Disabilities
Sarah Brandt; Amy Szarkowski
Learning Professional, v44 n5 p30-34 2023
Designing professional learning that meets the diverse needs of special education professionals is exciting, challenging, and critically important. The staff at the Children's Center for Communication/Beverly School for the Deaf in Massachusetts support deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing children from ages 3 to 22 with a range of communication and developmental challenges. To ensure that equity is at the core of their work, they have developed a framework to support the design and implementation of standards-based, equity-centered professional learning for special education professionals in their school and beyond. This paper provides a road map for educators from all disciplines as well as cultural, linguistic, and professional backgrounds which can be used to examine the professional learning they lead or engage in and identify opportunities to embed equity.
