Facilitating the Journey from Color-Blind to Antiracist Art Teacher
Christina D. Chin
Art Education, v76 n6 p18-23 2023
"I don't see color; I only see children" is a statement I often hear when discussing antiracist teaching. This common statement identifies a teacher as colorblind and reflects their color-blind perspective: an assumption that race is not a factor in the classroom. With such a perspective, color-blind teachers imply that they are not racist and deny the possibility that they perpetuate racism in their classrooms. It is wonderful that color-blind teachers may already recognize the value of seeing children as individuals. However, I encourage readers who identify with a colorblind perspective to see even further: Through this article, I hope to guide color-blind teachers to see the harm in ignoring the systemic racism these same children may be experiencing.
