Taming the Imposter Monster
Maria Stewart
Irish Educational Studies, v42 n4 p471-472 2023
In this article, the author offers suggestions to assist in taming "The Imposter Monster." What is that? Understanding that while academic writing can often be a daunting prospect for an early career researcher there are strategies that help. Author Marie Stewart writes one of the key strategies that her helped navigate this challenging terrain was developing a sense of belonging in the academic community. Another crucial step in overcoming feelings of trepidation was reaching out to more experienced researchers for guidance and mentorship. Perhaps the most transformative lesson learned was the benefit of accepting constructive criticism. Marie Stewart's experience as an early career researcher has been characterised by moments of insecurity and self-doubt, but it has also been a journey of self-growth and discovery. She concludes "The imposter monster" still rears its head from time to time, but with the right strategies and mindset, it can be tamed.
