Observing Dressing in a Collaborative or Trusting Environment: The Right to Participate in One's Own Care at the Emmi Pikler Nursery School in Budapest
Early Years: An International Journal of Research and Development, v43 n4-5 p778-793 2023
Dressing is a basic form of care that requires gross and fine motor skills, knowledge and strategies. For young children to acquire this set of skills, they must participate in their own care. This study aims to analyze the meaning of the behavior of "presenting the garment" to a two to three year-old child by an Emmi Pikler Nursery School educator in Budapest. This study was carried out in the usual context of the activity (the classroom), using observational methodology and, in particular, an "ad hoc" instrument created for this purpose. The results show that by presenting the garment, the educator provides the child with the right to participate in their own care and decide how and to what degree to do so.
