Up North, Black Families Walked Out: Counternarratives of Jim Crow (1930-1935) School Resistance

This article reports although much has been communicated about the history of school segregation in Southern states, less is described about the prevailing attempts to establish school segregation in Northern cities and towns. Black-owned and operated newspapers serve as primary sources for the communication of counternarratives that bear witness to the realities of Jim Crow America, in Northern and Southern states. Of particular interest to this study is the expansive coverage of schooling, curriculum, instruction, and policies related to public education in the years between 1930-1935. During the early 1930s the Northern States sought to uphold a pretense that they were distanced from the segregationists of the South. But it was the relentless journalistic efforts of black newspapers that continued to hold Northern states publicly accountable by naming segregation attempts as Jim Crow practices, a term typically reserved for Southern segregationists.
