Along with a host of higher education institutions (HEI), Ryerson University has championed social innovation in its programming for the past several years, culminating in the development of the Office of Social Innovation (OSI). They define social innovation as the practice of using creative and collaborative approaches to challenge historical and existing systems of exclusion, in order to have a transformative impact on society and the environment. They describe their approach as one that holistically engages students in studying, exploring, and acting on social systems. Social innovation, when seen through the lens of social justice and concretized through experiential activities, provides students with an opportunity and means to channel their creative energies towards a passion or commitment that they hold dear. This process of becoming involved with OSI and social innovation more broadly has allowed students to experience the significance of making a mark and an impact that goes beyond their academic programs and degrees, and potentially influencing their peers around them. In this article, the authors: (1) draw this call to reflection inward as they take a moment to explore what they have learned about social innovation and its learning outcomes for students; and (2) explore how student engagement in social innovation can be facilitated and its potential impacts on the learning experience.
