Family Engagement and Family Literacy: A Duo for a Strong School Foundation
Palacios, Rebecca A.
American Educator, v47 n3 p8-10 Fall 2023
Family engagement and family literacy are two of the most important or components for building a strong foundation for children's academic success. Family engagement is about spending quality time with children every day by talking, playing, and asking questions, which builds bonds and promotes language development. Family literacy supports children's literacy development by providing a print-rich environment, reading aloud, and using print to spark conversations. This article describes six key skills to help children from birth through elementary school become confident readers: (1) oral language; (2) vocabulary; (3) phonological awareness; (4) sound-letter relationships; (5) fluency; and (6) comprehension. Examples of ways to develop these skills are provided.
