Moving Together: Supporting Attachment in Parent-Toddler Dance Classes
Journal of Dance Education, v23 n1 p68-78 2023
Parent-Toddler Movement Class (PTMC) is a structured dance curriculum that introduces movement to toddlers and caregivers. Using a qualitative methodological approach, the present study investigated how PTMCs supported the attachment of 27 caregiver-toddler dyads. The children ranged in age from two- to three-years-old and were students enrolled at The School at the Mark Morris Dance Center in Brooklyn, New York. Each dyad participated in at least one of three cycles of eight, 45-minute sessions of PTMC. The central findings of this study identified a relationship between the caregiver's attunement, goodness of fit, and relinquishment of control with subsequent growth in the secure base behaviors of their toddler. Further, PTMC served as an opportunity for dyads to invest and devote time to experience joy together. The application of the theoretical underpinnings and research findings of this study to one's teaching practice are also discussed.
