Differentiated Instruction: How Adult Education Programs Can Foster a Learning Culture That Meets Individual Needs of Adult Students
Edouard, Gusman
COABE Journal: The Resource for Adult Education, v11 n1 p110-119 Spr 2022
Adult students have different backgrounds, knowledge, experiences, abilities, interests, and learning needs. Hence, teaching all learners the same way is not the most effective. Individual differences should be considered. Exposing a whole class to one set of content, exercises, and assessment activities is unrealistic. In other words, to learn effectively, adult students need options to study at their own pace, explore their interests, and focus on their needs instead of following the crowd. However, providing learners with options is easier said than done. What can adult education program administrators do to establish a learning culture that addresses individual students' interests and needs? This article will discuss the impact of differentiated instruction (DI) on adult learning. Additionally, it will share DI implementation guidelines to enable adult education programs and administrators (Program Directors, Instructional Specialists, and Coordinators) to establish a systematic approach to help instructors create classroom environments where individual students' interests, needs, and abilities are valued and taken into consideration.
