Developing Highly Effective Student Leaders: A Strengths-Based Framework for High-Achieving Economically Challenged Urban Undergraduates
Diaz-Mendoza, Virginia
About Campus, v28 n1 p8-18 Mar-Apr 2023
Leadership development provides students with the opportunity to acquire the interpersonal competence and networking skills they will need to be successful both in college and beyond. Despite having arrived at college less prepared, some economically challenged undergraduates perform extremely well and achieve academic excellence. However, many work extensive hours and have very little time for campus involvement and extracurricular opportunities offered. Given their limited involvement, highachieving economically challenged students may not acquire the interpersonal skills necessary for educational or professional endeavors beyond the undergraduate degree. This article describes a highly accessible strengths-based leadership development training program offered to high-achieving economically challenged students enrolled in an opportunity program at a Hispanic Serving Institution.
