Examining the Effects of Resilience on Stress and Academic Performance in Business Undergraduate College Students
Sukup, Leslie; Clayton, Russell
College Student Journal, v55 n3 p293-304 Sep 2021
Business undergraduate college students are experiencing one of the most stressful events in their life when they decide to attend college. This has led to those college students facing increased stress with difficulty coping. Continual stress can lead to college students becoming less successful in their academic and business endeavors as well as leading to acute health deteriorations. Additional research has supported that resilience is a critical factor in successfully overcoming stress and adversity. This quantitative study explored the relationship between resilience levels, academic performance, and stress levels in a sample of college students by breaking the study into two smaller studies. Study A explored the relationship between resilience, stress and academic performance. Study B, a quasi-experimental study, examined the effects of an intervention of resilience training. The findings from Study A indicate that there is a significant relationship between resilience and stress; however, there was no relationship found between resilience and academic performance. Study B findings indicate that there is a statistically significant relationship between resilience training and an increase in the participants' resilience levels.
