Chinese and Indian International Students: Vital Components for Campus Life Coping and Adjustment
Ma, Kyunghee; Pitner, Ronald; Sakamoto, Izumi; Park, Hyun Young
College Student Journal, v56 n1 p94-108 Mar 2022
This qualitative study explores the availability of social support for acculturation stress experienced by international students from China and India. Two focus group interviews were conducted with a total of 12 Chinese and Indian graduate students enrolled at a public university in the southeast US. Recorded interviews were transcribed verbatim in preparation for thematic analysis. Three acculturation stress-related themes emerged from the analysis: lack of diversity on-campus, fear of making mistakes, and microaggression(s) both in and out of the classroom. Social support-related themes included a tradition of 'paying it forward,' active engagement of academic advisors, and informational support offered by the International Student Services (ISS). Practical implications are made for university services and programs to assist these student groups in a culturally relevant manner.
