College Student Journal, v56 n1 p85-93 Mar 2022
The aim of this study was to examine the experiences of individuals who have been a part of friendships with negative communications that involved psychological abuse. Furthermore, to look into the opinions of participants of what could have been the instigator of such communication, their experience of ending the communication and their impression of support. A qualitative interview method was utilized where ten women were interviewed. The role of social workers and other professionals in situations like these was also examined. The results showed that psychological abuse can be characterized by controlling behavior, humiliation or threatening conduct according to the participants. The victims experienced the effects as mainly emotional and psychological stress and anxiety. Situations like these influenced the behaviour and communications skills of the victims. The support of others was found to be of great importance to the participants. The results indicate that professionals like social workers have a part to play in situations like these, however it is important that they approach their role with professionalism and consideration. Societal awareness of this issue is clearly of great importance for us to be able to respond appropriately to psychological abuse that can appear within friendships.
