Peer Mentoring Programme for Indian Students in China: The Beginning of a New Friendship or Just Another Scholar Procedure?

The transition to higher education institutions represents a challenge for any student, especially for international students who have to go through an academic and a socio-cultural adaptation process at the same time. Because of the insufficiency of Indian medical schools, many Indian students have come to China for English-medium medical programmes. To help Indian students with scholar and social problems, a Chinese counsellor is often assigned to them, following the same scheme for the Chinese students to facilitate their adaptation process. However, frequent communication problems, lack of trust and insufficient attention time have made this scheme insufficient for Indian students. In this research, a peer mentoring scheme is proposed as a possible solution to help Indian students in the adaptation process. Advantages were detected on the perceived scholar adaptation process and social support. These results and perceptions on the adaptation process of international students in non-English speaking countries are discussed.
