The Missing Element: Basic Literacy in Workforce Development
Bower, Jonathan A.
COABE Journal: The Resource for Adult Education, v10 n1 Article 9 p108-111 Spr 2021
More than 93 million Americans read at or below the Basic level, leaving them unprepared for job training or workforce success. Existing workforce development programs typically screen out low level readers or fail to meet their needs. Dual pathway teaching combining basic literacy skill development with job-related content shows promise as an onramp for low level readers. Combining job skills training with the use of literacy skill development software offers a lower cost approach, but depends on the careful selection of appropriate software.
