Revving Up Economic Mobility in the Motor City: How Detroit Has Accelerated, Contextualized, and Integrated Adult Education and Workforce Training

This article describes how public, nonprofit, and private partners in Detroit are working to improve and expand adult foundational skills development opportunities and connect them to workforce training as the city begins to make an economic comeback. It outlines the adult foundational skills challenge in Detroit, chronicles the work of a strategy group brought together by the Mayor's Office, and illustrates how the strategy group and funders used research on national best practices to fund and support evidence-based programs in Detroit. Evidence-based programs include integrated education and training, career pathway bridges, and employment-based and accelerated high school diploma/equivalency programs. The authors share observations from the grant program, note the important work of building a system alongside implementing promising programs, and discuss important takeaways for organizations and funders engaged in these types of efforts.
