COABE Journal: The Resource for Adult Education, v10 n1 Article 2 p23-37 Spr 2021
Today's workplace is going through tremendous changes and becoming highly complex in terms of technology and tasks. Thus, critical problem-solving skills are key to creating a sustainable career in today's global economy. Indeed, the global COVID-19 epidemic has amplified the need for these skills in almost all occupations. This study examined the relationship between problem-solving skills and several demographic variables by assessing working adults in the United States using data from the Survey of Adult Skills, a product of the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC). Our results indicate that the relationship between problem-solving skills and professional development is complex. Factors such as sex, age, education, and income all contributed to the observed patterns and results. Our findings support the concept that as the fast pace of change becomes the new normal in today's global workplace, it is critical for all adult learners to become more self-directed, lifelong learners.
