Innovative Solutions to Support Spanish-Speaking Early Educators: Examples from Briya Public Charter School in Washington, DC
Kushner, Beth; Castro-Trujillo, Mau
COABE Journal: The Resource for Adult Education, v10 n1 Article 6 p74-81 Spr 2021
As a reaction to new citywide regulations requiring Child Development Associate (CDA) credentials and associate's degrees in early childhood education for those working in childcare facilities and home daycares in Washington, DC, Briya Public Charter School (Briya) created pathways to further the education for their largest population, Spanish speakers. First, Briya created a two-generation CDA course to support Spanish speakers' entry into the field of education and provide a place for their children to grow and develop in Briya's early childhood program. In addition, Briya partnered with the University of the District of Columbia to create the nation's first English/Spanish bilingual associate's degree in Early Childhood Education. With these programs, along with wraparound support, Spanish-speaking early childhood educators in Washington, DC, have a path to excel in their field.
