Equity in Literacy: Highlighting Three Black Women of Literacy
Cote, Pamela
COABE Journal: The Resource for Adult Education, v9 n2 Article 13 p109-113 Win 2020-2021
In this article, we share the stories of three inspirational Black women who were pioneers in adult literacy: Harriet Jacobs, Susie King Taylor, and Septima Poinsette Clark. Their stories, connected to the struggle for Black literacy and the Civil Rights movement, remain relevant as we continue to strive for social justice and equity for all citizens. Seeking to highlight their important commitment to Black literacy, we created a small unit of study, "Three Black Women of Literacy." The unit of study provides lessons that focus on informational reading strategies and reflective writing, along with a "tools for teachers" resource list. An important part of our history, these women proved their dedication to Black literacy--specifically adult literacy--and had a profound impact on their learners.
