Developing Global Citizens through STEM Activities
Hunt, Emily
Primary Science, n175 p7-9 Nov-Dec 2022
Global citizenship encourages children to reflect on the world around them and understand their identity within a global community. Oxfam (1997) defines the global citizen as someone who: (1) is aware of the wider world and has a sense of their own role as a world citizen; (2) respects and values diversity; (3) has an understanding of how the world works; (4) is passionately committed to social justice; (5) participates in the community at a range of levels, from the local to the global; (6) works with others to make the world a more equitable and sustainable place; and (7) takes responsibility for their actions. In this article, Emily Hunt discusses ways to teach primary schoolchildren global citizenship skills through STEM activities, thereby showing them that they have both the power and responsibility to create positive change in the world.
