Infusing SEL into the Elementary Mathematics Experience
Orgel, Rachel H.
Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12, v115 n11 p792-800 Nov 2022
This article will discuss how Maryland's Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) elementary school mathematics team helped teachers acquire the knowledge and skills to implement mathematics instruction and the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) 5 competencies concurrently, with the goal of addressing the social and emotional learning needs of students without losing the integrity of the mathematics. The MCPS elementary mathematics curriculum includes four components to each lesson: (1) Fluency, (2) Application Problem, (3) Concept Development, and (4) Student Debrief. The integrated model can be applied to any curricular product, but the authors found the structure of the four components in the curriculum well suited to organize the project. This article also includes opportunities for readers to connect the project to their own classrooms and districts.
