Pubertal Timing and Externalizing Problem Behaviours in Adolescents: The Influence of Perceived Parental Attachments
European Journal of Developmental Psychology, v18 n3 p330-349 2021
Pubertal timing carries social as well as psychological implications. It is observed that adolescents rely upon their families, friends and other social circles for learning important skills that help them to cope with the pressures they face during the pubertal transition towards adulthood successfully. Since behavioural response to puberty also depends on the different social context in which it occurs, an effort is made to understand role of parent-adolescent attachment in comprehending pubertal timing effects on problem behaviours of adolescents under the premise of contextual amplification model. For this purpose, cross-sectional data consisting of 772 adolescents (age 11--15 years) were taken. Each participant completed the Pubertal Developmental Scale, Youth Self Report and Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment. Results highlight early maturing adolescents with insecure perceived parental attachments to have higher scores on externalizing problems in comparison to their on-time and late maturing peers. On the basis of these results, it can be concluded that stressful biological and social changes inherent in pubertal development elicits certain behavioural responses in adolescents that become more pronounced in those who lack supportive parental structures that help them to negotiate the demands of their new status with better adjustment.
