McCullum, Charcelor; Perkins, Catherine; Shanock, Andrew
Communique, v51 n5 p14-15 Jan-Feb 2023
The NASP Leadership Development Committee (LDC) has focused its work on fostering leadership skills among individual school psychologists by providing professional development through convention sessions, articles, and the NASP Leadership Institute. The Leadership Institute is a 5-part online course designed to help school psychologists improve their leadership skills, whether they serve in an official leadership role within their district or school psychology professional association, or simply want to improve their ability to impact systems change. School psychologists must possess a variety of leadership knowledge, skills, and abilities to effectively support and lead equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives as well as address potential barriers to this work. One of the most important elements of doing this work as a visionary leader is developing a system of collaborative support. Engaging in a mentoring relationship is one way to build out such a system. Mentoring is one of the most effective practices with regard to developing leadership in school psychologists. This article describes activities that enhance mentorship relationships.
