Intercultural Relationships and Students' Sense of Social Connectedness in a South African University
Review of Education, Pedagogy & Cultural Studies, v44 n3 p253-280 2022
Global shifts in the demographic composition of students has brought to the fore the importance of developing policies and practices that promote intercultural relationships among the diverse students who enroll in universities. One of the challenges students face in universities is integrating into the institutional culture and developing relationships with other students from diverse cultural backgrounds. While a plethora of research studies in South Africa have addressed issues regarding cultural diversity and intercultural relationships in educational settings, not much research has been conducted to examine the association between intercultural relationships and students' sense of social connectedness in universities. In order to examine the connection between students' intercultural relationships and their sense of social connectedness in a university setting through the lenses of multiculturalism this study sought answer to one central research question: how can strong intercultural relationships enhance their sense of social connectedness in a university setting by way of multiculturalism?
