When Higher Education Is Framed as a Privilege: Anti-Blackness and Affirmative Action during Tumultuous Times
Sulé, V. Thandi; Winkle-Wagner, Rachelle; Maramba, Dina C.; Sachs, Abigail
Review of Higher Education, v45 n4 p415-448 Sum 2022
Through a critical discourse analysis of online comments to a "New York Times" newspaper article about "Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President and Fellows of Harvard College," this study explores how public comments about affirmative action offer insight into larger racial discourses about college admissions. Findings indicate that public opinion frames higher education as a privilege, suggesting either White students or people who are not Black are most deserving of admission to selective colleges. Comments often invoked racist ideas about which students deserve a college education. Implications relative to college access for racially minoritized students are considered.
