Communication Education in K-12 Contexts: Strategic Initiatives to Engage Student and Instructor Stakeholders
Strawser, Michael G.; Hannah, Maria; Densmore, Carly
Communication Education, v71 n3 p246-250 2022
Common Core State Standards (CCSS) were initially adopted in 2010 and serve as high-quality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy. The initiative has been met with mixed reviews. At the same time, the National Communication Association called for communication standards and competencies in K-12 education to enhance students' speaking, listening, and media literacy skills toward effective communication. Focusing on fundamentals of effective communication, these guidelines include how competent communicators can describe various aspects of communication, use communication behaviors, and form attitudes centered in appreciation of the role of communication in lives. In this article, the authors discuss where communication standards are currently in K-12 education and develop ideas for moving the agenda forward.
