Standards at the School Level: A Standards-Driven Culture of Learning Thrives at Georgia High School
Thornton, Nia
Learning Professional, v43 n3 p38-40 Jun 2022
When Nia Thornton became an assistant principal at Central Gwinnett High School in Georgia, one of her responsibilities was to lead professional learning for the school staff. She and the school leadership team were excited engage the staff in meaningful, day-to-day learning. They knew that their work needed to be rooted in current research and best practices to get buy-in and engage all staff. They found that Learning Forward's Standards for Professional Leaning provided a framework for doing just that. The standards have gave them a foundation for visualizing, planning, and monitoring their professional learning efforts, and they have become part of the culture of learning at the school. In this article, Ms. Thornton examines how standards play key roles at the school level.
