What are modern-day educational experiences like for Native American students who are moving through a system rooted in racism and the extermination of their culture? One would hope that they now have safe, inclusive spaces where all students feel welcome and respected; where they can navigate their educational journeys successfully. Rather than give a literature review of the many sources that show that quite the opposite is true, the author shares a personal recent experience that she had in 2019 at a higher education campus that embraces an Indigenous school mascot. While there is increasing support for Native programs, efforts to recruit and retain Native students, the hiring of Native faculty, and an increase in the honoring of Native people and land acknowledgments on some campuses, a campus that continues to use a mascot that has repeatedly been identified by Native people as racist; a mascot that leads to a climate and culture of purposeful or even unintentional acceptance of racism, is still a campus that is perpetuating harm on Native students.
