Parks, Rodney; Layne, Prudence; Taylor, Alexander; Hayes, Casey
College and University, v97 n2 p65-70 May 2022
As the COVID-19 pandemic was closing businesses, academia had to make the tough decision about their fall 2020 courses. For many institutions, in-person instruction is foundational to the student experience, and opting for an alternate method such as online runs contrary to their mission statements. During summer 2020, Elon University decided to offer in-person instruction while providing options for students, faculty, and staff to teach and learn remotely for the upcoming fall semester. Many of these challenges fell on the registrar's office, which was tasked with developing new systems to track and support the campus. The faculty would then have to integrate any policies and systems that were developed into their teaching. In this article, the authors share their lessons about how they aided to keep their institution open during a pandemic.
