Better Together in Reaching Our Goals
Holland, Jacqueline M.; Turgeson, Susan M.; Werhan, Carol R.
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v114 n2 p16-18 Sum 2022
In response to Stefany J. Grant's Feature/Reflections article, "Integrating Sustainability: Are We Doing Enough?" (EJ1348861), the authors share their insights as leaders and educators in the family and consumer sciences (FCS) field. FCS educators are called to address sustainability through the National Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher Education Standards. When FCS teachers use the standards to guide and evaluate their practice, sustainability is a thread that is woven throughout the curriculum applying creative and innovative strategies to engage students. FCS professionals need to highlight the work being done so administrators, parents, and community members can be more aware of the impact of FCS on the lives and careers of 21st Century students. In doing so, FCS professionals develop advocates who will value FCS curriculum and support access for more students.
