ZERO TO THREE, v42 n3 p61-69 2022
Racism, inequalities, and injustices continue to exist in American social structures, institutions, and systems of care. This article explores how the field of mental health is influenced by practices rooted in White supremacy culture and requires a paradigm shift toward a multidimensional view of risk, resilience, and protective factors. Becoming a transformative, holistic, empowering, adaptive, reflective, and diversity-informed (THEARD) system of care requires personal and organizational accountability; transparency and understanding of the role of bias, privilege, and power; and the legacies of structural racism, historical trauma, and oppression that continue to exist and perpetuate harm among Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC).
