Forces and Motion in a Nutshell
Rogers, Ben
Primary Science, n172 p8-10 Mar 2022
Forces and motion are at the heart of physics and children start learning from the moment they are able to interact with the world. Children as young as one year show surprise when a ball does not behave as expected. This is a tremendous bonus to learning physics, but it has hidden dangers: they only learn how things move on the Earth, where we always have air resistance and gravity. This often leads to misconceptions. Another cause of misconceptions is the language we use: there are so many everyday English words for forces and how things move. The first challenge is to start to recognise all the everyday words related to forces and motion. This is where play and talk go hand in hand. From nursery onwards, start building children's forces and motion vocabulary through rich play and talk. By the time they reach year 3 (age 7), they will be ready to talk and understand forces and motion and how they interact. The author suggests how to build up children's knowledge of forces and motion so by the time they go to high school they will have a world of experience to draw upon.
