Revisiting Reinhart for Uncertain Teaching Times
Kalchman, Mindy
Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12, v115 n5 p351-356 May 2022
Reinhart's (2000) article "Never Say Anything a Kid Can Say!" shared the lessons he learned as he journeyed from a teacher-centered model of instruction to one that puts students at the center of the teaching and learning process. Within his narrative, he itemized the strategies he used and learned from, balanced recommendations with compassion for the process, and offered teachers achievable pathways to reform. Reinhart suggested transforming 10 percent of our instructional choices per year. This rate of change now seems glacial in our pandemic and endemic world of teaching. The author argues that the words Reinhart wrote about the challenges of reforming practice as we transitioned from the 20th to the 21st century are just as relevant today. Whether we are moving away from a teacher-centered model of instruction toward a student-centered culture of learning, or pivoting to and from remote or hybrid teaching, a framework for change, rapid or eventual, can help with feelings of chaos and uncertainty.
