Teaching Preschool Art at a Therapeutic Childcare Center
Whiteland, Susan R.
Art Education, v75 n2 p40-45 2022
A chorus of young voices sang along with a video clip of the YouTube version of "Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes" being played as the introduction for an art activity. A university student led the art lesson as part of a special topics course that provided art experiences for preschool-aged children enrolled in the therapeutic childcare center. The scenario was part of a problem-based learning (PBL) activity. PBL is an educational model that presents a question or problem for students to research and solve during their course of study. The collaboratively designed problem that the author's students investigated during their university coursework was how to develop art lessons for children with special needs that encourage opportunities for social development, self-expression, and communication. This article outlines how university students engaged in answering the question.
