An Afternoon Spent behind Bars: The Impact of Touring a Correctional Facility on Student Learning

This article examines the impact of prison tours on students' understanding of prisons, their ability to empathize and understand the viewpoints of others, and their attitudes toward punishment. The research participants were undergraduate students enrolled in various sections of an introductory criminology course. Students in some sections of the course were given the opportunity to tour a local correctional facility (n = 38) while other students did not participate in a prison tour (n = 24). All participants completed pre- and posttest measures of empathy, perspective taking, and attitudes toward prison reform. The findings revealed no significant differences in scores for any of the three measures between the two groups of participants. However, students in the tour condition demonstrated a better understanding of various aspects of prison life compared to those in the no-tour condition. Additionally, students in the tour condition expressed satisfaction with the prison field trip and stated that it improved their understanding of course content.
