Taking Science Home
Saporita-Clark, Nicola
Primary Science, n170 p5-7 Nov 2021
Engaging children with science, sparking curiosity, encouraging questioning and hands-on exploration are among the top priorities for educators at Nicola Saporita-Clark's primary school in Lancashire, and something they have worked hard to engage the whole school community with over a number of years. They recognise that not all families have the confidence or life experiences to support children to explore at first hand a range of scientific phenomena. Therefore, they provide that guidance and encouragement, which has been well received by their school community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they found new ways to make science happen in school and at home through what they named the All Saints' "Science at Home" newsletters. The principle behind the newsletter was simple: to encourage all children (and their families) to be engaged with science at home, to share an enthusiasm and passion with parents and siblings, including pre-school-aged children. In this article, Saporita-Clark briefly describes the components of the newsletter and how it has evolved over time with the help of recommendations from children and parents.
