It Is All about Adaptation: Surviving in a Changing Environment
Price, Rebecca
Primary Science, n170 p11-13 Nov 2021
Within the 'normal' English National Curriculum for science it is usual in Rebecca Price's school for year 6 children (ages 10-11) to investigate how animals have adapted to suit their environment. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone has had to adapt, in an international team effort, to an ever-changing environment. Full immersion in learning experiences is core to the philosophy and beliefs at Willows Primary School in Stoke on Trent. In this way, subject areas can enhance one another. One of these enrichment approaches that children regularly benefited from was first-hand animal encounters to support the biology-based units within science and other topics. In this article, Price describes how she adapted what had previously been hugely successful hands-on face-to-face, concrete experiences with a local provider, Simon Airey, 'The Animal Man' of Corner Exotics to a virtual world. She describes how they set up a pilot in her school and then responded to feedback to be able to offer road-tested and curriculum-ready sessions to other schools across Stoke on Trent.
