Fleming, Laurie; Kearns, Jeremiah
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, v93 n2 p35-40 2022
Schools can address the barriers to the educational success of students by utilizing the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model in the areas of health services, counseling, psychological and social services. Health and Physical Education (PE) teachers are uniquely positioned to assist in the reduction of physical and mental health barriers to learning by participating in the WSCC team; and to help integrate plans to address academic, behavioral, social, and emotional needs. Their unique role as experts in health and physical activity also allows the time and format to integrate health and mental health systems of support within their curriculum. Health and PE teachers can work within the existing programs and frameworks utilized in schools to promote a positive school environment and improve the physical and mental well-being of students.
