Pediatric Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: What School Psychologists Should Know

Many school psychologists will work with a student with a medical condition in their careers, and information on the student's condition is crucial to understanding their individual needs. One type of medical condition that a school psychologist may encounter is childhood-onset autoimmune disease, such as pediatric systemic lupus erythematosus (PSLE). While PSLE is uncommon, a student with this diagnosis may have a variety of needs in the classroom requiring support, and these needs may not be obvious to those unfamiliar with PSLE. Students with PSLE can have clear medical needs, but they may also need assistance academically and socially, and these needs can change over time since PSLE is a dynamic condition. Since PSLE can vary widely between individuals, this article is intended to serve as a guideline of factors to consider when working with these students.
