Design of an Online Chemistry of Art Master's Elective Course
Journal of Chemical Education, v99 n2 p694-700 Feb 2022
An online chemistry of art course was developed for K-12 teachers enrolled in a Master of Education in Interdisciplinary STEM Education program. This course focused on the chemistry involved in the preparation of artists' materials, art, and the authentication of art and artifacts. The specific course topics addressed safety in creating art; the Shroud of Turin; art forensics; pigments, paints, and dyes; color and light; and clay, glazes, and ceramics. Course content, class discussions, and a hands-on art project were used to show teachers how to teach chemistry through art, so that they could do likewise in their classroom. Teachers were given time in the course to design two lessons relating chemistry to art, so that they would have immediately useable lessons. They were also given time in the last few weeks of the semester to reflect on what they had learned and to write a statement describing their future use of course material in the classroom. The design of this chemistry of art master's course is described.
