Food for Thought: Nourishing the Dancing Body
Adams, Marianne
Journal of Dance Education, v21 n4 p247-256 2021
A number of complex, interrelated issues impact dancer norms and nourishment knowledge, which can make the subject daunting to address. This article provides a curricular model which examines aspects of physical, mental, and emotional wellness as components of human nourishment. An interdisciplinary literature review considers the intersectionality of gender, socio-political and economic factors, cultural perspectives, and spiritual aspects of nourishment. Related issues on the roles of resiliency, sustainability, relationships, and norms in dance training are also examined through readings and sample assignments. To create a broad lens on nourishment literacy, divergent approaches, dance practices, and influences from popular culture are considered. The article concludes with anecdotal perspectives from an international nourishment panel to broaden the typical North American cultural viewpoint. Collectively, the course unit provides a holistic model for aspiring dancers to be informed, self-aware, healthy human beings.
