Redistributing Resources for Men of Color in Higher Education
Huerta, Adrian H.; Dizon, Jude Paul Matias
About Campus, v26 n4 p19-25 Sep-Oct 2021
The authors of this article are both men of color (Chicano and Filipino) and former student affairs educators. For over a year, the authors have been engaged in a multiple case study of five comprehensive state universities that have institutionalized support for men of color. The study sites are all within the same state higher education system, which is in the midst of a multi-year strategic plan to increase four-year graduation rates and eliminate equity gaps. In 2019, the system received $75 million from the state legislature to achieve its goals. While institutional leaders recognize the disparities in retention and graduation rates for men of color, the organization, staffing, and funding of men of color retention programs vary significantly across the study sites. This article presents the insights, experiences, and challenges shared by close to 160+ students, staff, faculty, and senior administrators. For ease, pseudonyms are used to refer to the five university sites and men of color programs. The research affirms the benefits of targeted efforts for men of color and draws attention to the institutional commitment that is still needed to reduce equity gaps for this student population.
