The Battle of COVID-19: Art Teachers as Indestructible Force
Art Education, v74 n6 p28-32 2021
Some compare teachers to superheroes. This problematic comparison forges unrealistic expectations for teachers (Spencer, 2019), but at this moment, it seems fitting, as thousands of art teachers rally together for the good of students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Teaching strategies needed to conform to students in no-tech, low-tech, and high-tech situations. Curricula needed to be flexible but engaging. Teachers and students craved strategies for de-stressing. In response to these needs, the Online Art Teachers (K-12) Facebook group (OATK12) was formed as a service project on March 11, 2020, by Trina Harlow, art professor and coordinator for a university art education program. By April 28, the group had more than 10,000 members. By November, the group had exceeded 18,000. The pandemic pushed practitioners in unimaginable ways while writing new plots for the future of art education. This article shares patterns found in the group's page posts and three resolutions for Art Education, as evidenced by OATK12.
