'That Hat Means a Lot More than a Hat for Some of Us': Gay Latino Collegians in the Era of Trump
Patrón, Oscar E.
Race, Ethnicity and Education, v24 n6 p737-754 2021
While there has been significant media coverage on Trump and his administration's stance on LGBTQ and Latina/o communities, there has been limited empirical research on the matter. In this qualitative study, I employed racist nativism and queer critical theory to examine the lives of gay Latino men in college, with a focus on their race/ethnicity and sexuality, within the polarizing racial climate under Trump. Consistent with the conceptual frameworks, I elucidate the findings through in-depth critical race testimonios while accounting for systemic oppression (e.g., heterosexism, racism, white supremacy). Findings revealed the following themes: (1) fear as a result of the intersections of racist nativism and homophobia; and (2) racialized incidents: "Trumpists" on campus. Implications for research and practice are discussed.
